When the madwoman's warnings come true and Serrano's sheltered existence is threatened by plans to build a dam, Jeronimo heads for the city himself. Will he and Filipa finally be reunited?

Cape Verde Traditional Art and Culture. The Cape Verde Islands were uninhabited until the Portuguese first landed in 1460. They settled in an area of Santiago which they called Ribeira Grande and which they used as a slave-trade post between Africa and the New World. Some Africans stayed on the island and worked as slaves on the latifundas, or plantations, there. Ribeira Grande experienced several pirate attacks, and was abandoned after a French assault in 1712. After 1876, with the decline of slave trade, the islands lost much of their economic value to the Portuguese. The main architectural heritage of Cape Verde consists of the Cidade Velha, the town of Ribeira Grande de Santiago and the first Portuguese town built in Africa. Recently classified by UNESCO as a world heritage site, the Cidade Velha contains several monuments of great historical significance, but very few of them are still intact.........

Cape Verde Art and Culture: Custom, Tradition and Environment

Amilcar Cabral, who was the Secretary-General of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and the Cape Verde Islands (PAIGC), was assassinated by Portuguese agents on January 20, 1973. Under his leadership, the PAIGC liberated three-quarters of the countryside of Guinea in less than ten years of revolutionary struggle. Cabral distinguished himself among modern revolutionaries by the long and careful preparation, both theoretical and practical, which he undertook before launching the revolutionary struggle, and, in the course of the preparation, became one of the world's outstanding theoreticians of anti-imperialist struggle. This volume contains some of the principal speeches Cabral delivered in his last years during visits to the United States. The first is his speech to the fourth Commission of the United Nations General Assembly on October 16, 1972, on "Questions of Territories Under Portuguese Administration." His brilliant speeches on "National Liberation and Culture" (1970) and "Identity and Dignity in the Context of the National Liberation Struggle" (1972) follow.

The People Of The Cape Verde Islands: Exploitation And Emigration

In "Managing African Portugal", Kesha Fikes shows how the final integration of Portugal’s economic institutions into the European Union (EU) in the late 1990s changed everyday encounters between African migrants and Portuguese citizens. This economic transition is examined through transformations in ideologies of difference enacted in workspaces in Lisbon between the mid-1990s and the early 2000s. Fikes evaluates shifts in racial discourse and considers how both antiracism and racism instantiate proof of Portugal’s European “conversion” and modernization.The ethnographic focus is a former undocumented fish market that at one time employed both Portuguese and Cape Verdean women. Both groups eventually sought work in low-wage professions as maids, nannies, and restaurant-kitchen help. The visibility of poor Portuguese women as domestics was thought to undermine the appearance of Portuguese modernity; by contrast, the association of poor African women with domestic work confirmed it. Fikes argues that we can better understand how Portugal interpreted its economic absorption into the EU by attending to the different directions in which working-poor Portuguese and Cape Verdean women were routed in the mid-1990s and by observing the character of the new work relationships that developed among them. In "Managing African Portugal", Fikes pushes for a study of migrant phenomena that considers not only how the enactment of citizenship by the citizen manages the migrant, but also how citizens are simultaneously governed through their uptake and assumption of new EU citizen roles.

O Mar na Lajinha

      Cape Verdean Americans are the only major group of Americans to have
         made the voyage from Africa to the United States voluntarily. Their homeland,
         a drought-stricken archipelago off the west coast of Africa, had long
         been colonized by the Portuguese. Arriving in New England first as crew
         members of whaling vessels, these Afro-Portuguese immigrants later came
         as permanent settlers in their own packet ships. They were employed in
         the cranberry industry, on the docks, and as domestic workers.
       Marilyn Halter combines oral history with analyses of ships' records
         to create a detailed picture of the history and adaptation patterns of
         the Cape Verdean Americans, who identified themselves in terms of ethnicity
         but whose mixed African-European ancestry led their new society to view
         them as a racial group. Halter emphasizes racial and ethnic identity formation
         among Cape Verdeans, who adjusted to their new life by setting themselves
         apart from the African American community while attempting to shrug off
         white society's exclusionary tactics. Ethnographic analysis of rural life
         on the bogs of Cape Cod is contrasted with the New Bedford, Massachusetts,
         urban community to show how the immigrants established their own social
         and religious groups and maintained their "Crioulo" customs.
